The University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor/First Year Experience Librarian in the University Libraries to begin in fall 2018.
The First Year Experience Librarian is a member of a team responsible for providing general and specialized research, instruction, outreach, and collection development services and reports to the Head of Public Services. The position serves as primary contact between the Libraries and the Office of New Student and Retention Programs and the First Year Writing Program in the Department of English with regard to supporting the research resource and instructional needs of first-year students, along with some additional responsibilities. The FYE Librarian engages in outreach initiatives that build awareness of library resources and services and actively cultivates relationships with faculty, staff, and students in assigned areas. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Provides research assistance through individual research consultations, as well as providing reference and directional assistance to library users, in-person, by telephone, and via electronic communication methods. Creates and maintains online guides (e.g., using LibGuides) and other research tools in assigned areas. Working evenings, weekends, and holidays in rotation with other Research Services personnel may be required.
Provides instruction in the use of research resources through course-integrated instruction and workshops presented in-person and online. Creates and maintains online tutorials and other instructional tools in assigned areas.
Coordinates collection development for assigned academic areas.
May participate in library programs that support open access, such as the Open Textbook Initiative.
To fulfill the expectations for tenure and promotion, engages in scholarship and professional development and also provides service to the Libraries, the University, the profession, and the community. Performs other duties as assigned.
Master’s degree in library and/or information science from a program accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent education or experience.
Demonstrated experience using online databases and other types of research resources.
Demonstrated ability to teach the concepts and skills of information literacy in both formal and informal settings.
Additional advanced degree in a relevant academic discipline.
Demonstrated experience providing reference/research assistance in an academic library.
Demonstrated experience providing instruction in an academic library.
Demonstrated experience with instructional design and instruction assessment.
Demonstrated experience or interest in developing outreach programs that engage students and faculty with library research resources.
Knowledge of undergraduate living/learning environments and day-to-day experiences of first-year students.
