Job Summary
Supervises
and participates in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields,
intramural fields, band fields, and practice fields as needed by performing
skilled grounds repair and maintenance. This position requires extensive night and weekend work and flexible
scheduling due to the impact of weather conditions on job duties. This position is considered essential and
could require storm duty.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises and
participates in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields within
guidelines and standards set by the National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA), Sun Belt Conference and the department.
- Prepares and maintains
athletic fields and grounds by performing turf-grass management practices
including: mowing, edging, laying
sod, aerating, verti-cutting, topdressing, irrigation repairs, infield
skin maintenance, as well as assisting with fertilizer, herbicide, and
pest control applications.
- Supervises and
participates in preparing sports fields for practice and scheduled game
events.
- Supervises and
participates in irrigation use, planning, and maintenance.
- Supervises and
participates in the maintenance of assigned areas and in the daily picking
up of trash and debris.
- Supervises and
participates in the maintenance of equipment and makes repairs as
required.
- Performs other duties as
assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High
school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related
experience and/or training in athletic field or grounds maintenance. Must have
a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates
or bachelors degree in Agronomy, Turfgrass Science, or Soil Science and one to
three years experience in collegiate or professional athletic field maintenance.
